Elon Musk launches new AI company xAI to understand reality

The billionaire entrepreneur aims to challenge the dominance of OpenAI and Google in the field of artificial intelligence

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter, has announced the formation of a new AI company called xAI, which he says will seek to understand the true nature of the universe. Here are some important things to know about his latest venture:

xAI is separate from Musk’s other businesses, but will work closely with them.

According to the company’s website, xAI will collaborate with Twitter, Tesla and other companies to leverage their data and expertise. The website also states that xAI is not affiliated with X Corp, Musk’s holding company that oversees his other ventures.

xAI has hired top researchers from Google, OpenAI and other tech giants.

The team at xAI consists of 11 researchers who have worked at leading AI labs such as Google’s DeepMind, Microsoft Research and OpenAI. Some of the notable names include Igor Babuschkin, Tony Wu, Christian Szegedy and Greg Yang. The company will also be advised by Dan Hendrycks, the director of the Center for AI Safety.

xAI’s goal is to create a maximally curious AI that tries to understand reality.

Musk has previously expressed his concerns about the potential dangers of AI, calling for its development to be paused and regulated. He believes that creating an AI that is interested in understanding the nature of the universe is the best way to ensure its safety and alignment with humanity. He also predicts that superintelligence, or AI that is smarter than humans, will arrive in five or six years.

xAI will compete with OpenAI and Google in the field of natural language processing.

Musk has been critical of OpenAI’s popular chatbot ChatGPT, which he claims has a liberal bias and does not seek the truth. He plans to develop an alternative tool that will be a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that can answer any question about reality. He also aims to challenge Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI, which are also powerful natural language models.

xAI was launched on a date that has a special meaning for Musk.

Musk chose July 12, 2023, to announce xAI because it is related to a science fiction classic, Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. In his tweet, he noted that adding the date 7-12-23 equals 42, which the novel famously postulates is the answer to life.

xAI is one of the most ambitious and mysterious projects that Musk has ever undertaken. It remains to be seen how it will shape the future of AI and humanity.
